How Long will my Outdoor Flag Last

We have found this question nearly impossible to answer accurately.  The U.S. Government generally expects a flag to last approximately 90 days based on daily usage from sunrise to sunset – but not during periods of inclement weather.  Tests have shown that in some cases a flag flown 24 hours a day will last only one-fourth as long as one flown during daylight hours only.  The major enemies of a flag are the wind, the sun and abnormally high winds.  Neither you nor we can control the weather, but you can take care of your flag and lengthen its life.

Here are some things to remember:

#1. Do not expose your flag to rain, snow or abnormally high winds.  These conditions will shorten its life considerably.

#2. Your flag works extremely hard while being displayed.  It whips, it snaps, it bakes, it freezes!  Flying a heavy, wet flag in high winds puts excessive strain on the fabric and stitching, and will greatly reduce the life of your flag.  Is it any wonder that it needs to be replaced two or three times a year?

#3. Do not place the flag where the wind will whip it against any rough surfaces.  Such as tree branches, buildings, electrical wires, etc.  The smallest tear can soon result in a tattered flag.

#4. Occasional washing in warm mild detergent water will prevent dirt and pollutants from attacking the fabric.

#5. Have your flag repaired at the first sign of fraying.  Trimming off and re-hemming torn or frayed ends will help extend the life of your flag.

Our flags are manufactured to give maximum service in return for reasonable care.  No two flags wear the same.  Because weather conditions vary, most flags flown 24 hours a day 7 days a week will need to be replaced two or three times a year.
